Whilst we recommend a chimney sweep service to be used regularly, that regularity does change depending on a couple of different factors. Firstly the type of fuel used which then leads to different types of burns. Wood or coal create a lot more soot than other fuels, which can then lead to a build up of debree within the chimney flute. For wood or coal, we would recommend quarterly cleaning if the chimney is in regular use. If you are to use gas and oil fuels for your chimney, or even smokeless fuel in general, we would recommend a chimney sweep at least once a year.
The other factor to consider is simply usage. If you use your chimney or fireplace regularly, you will then need to get schedule maintenance and chimney sweep services more often so that it continues to work efficiently.
